Connemara Marathon 2011
On April 10th 2011 a dozen members of the Brothers Pearse Gaelic Football Club Senior team will be joining 3000 competitors from 37 countries in this years Connemara Half Marathon in County Galway, Ireland – “The Connemarathon”. The course meanders past bogs, hills, lakes, and the Twelve Pin mountains rising up over the great expanse of Killary Lough, through the quiet village of Leenane, around the Maam Turk Mountains and all the way back up to Maam Cross.
It will be the first time any of the lads from the gaelic football club have taken part in a Half Marathon event – but they have been training hard – taking part in the Huddersfield Road runners 10k, the Wakefield 10k and by doing laps of Blackmoorfoot reservoir!
The Huddersfield competitors will be raising money for the Marsh based charity – The Joseph Salmon Trust. Anyone wishing to sponsor the lads can do by visiting our fundraising page https://www.justgiving.com/teams/connemarathon
Brothers Pearse GAA Club has always had strong links with the West of Ireland and Connemara in particular. Since the 1970′s there has been a regular series of games and cultural exchanges between Brothers Pearse Gaelic Football Cub and Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir and An Cheathrú Rua Gaelic Football Clubs from the Gaelic speaking area of Connemara.
On the field the team have had a good start to this years Pennine league – drawing 1-9 a peice with a strong, experienced Young Irelands team based in Leeds on Sunday. The game was of a very high standard for so early on in the season, and Brothers Pearse will be looking to build on this result in their next few games.
Trianing takes place at 7pm at Colne Valley High School every Tuesday evening. Anyone wishing to get involved with gaelic games in Huddersfield in any way should contact the club Secretary Ollie Walsh – 01484 536945 – or email brotherspearse@yahoo.co.uk
This year will see the clubs youth section form a new partnership with St Patrick’s Catholic Primary. This will focus on providing Gaelic Games activities and coaching for all year groups over the academic year and creating a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship between the club and school, while also providing enjoyable activities outside of school.
